July 9th - A Talk for World Peace

July 9, 2011 - His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet, one of the world’s most revered spiritual leaders, will be making a HISTORIC VISIT to Washington, DC in July 2011.  During this time, he will be conferring the Kalachakra for World Peace for the first time in the nation’s capital.  In addition to this unprecedented event, he will be participating in a historic World Peace Event at the U.S. Capitol (West Lawn) in Washington, DC on Saturday, July 9th at 9:30 a.m.  This celebration will feature “A Talk for World Peace” by His Holiness.

Free and Open to the Public

The event is FREE TO THE PUBLIC, and people of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to attend.  The event is hosted by the Capital Area Tibetan Association (CATA).

Few lives in history have spoken as deeply to the goodness of the human spirit as that of of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.  He has spread his message of peace, non-violence, tolerance, compassion and wisdom around the world in over 62 countries and across six continents.  Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, His Holiness has received over 84 humanitarian commendations, including the Congressional Gold Medal in 2007, and has authored more than 72 books.  He has overcome unspeakable hardships while leading the people of Tibet during and after the brutal occupation of their homeland.  His Holiness has also established a democratic Tibetan government-in-exile, promoting a vision of democracy and rule of law.  His simple demeanor and joyful humor have endeared him to millions of people around the world.

  • 7:00 am   - The West Lawn will be open to the public. 
    Space on the West Lawn is limited so please arrive early. 
    Lawn seating only (no chairs).

    9:30 am   - Program Begins:

    10:00 am - Invocation for World Peace for Solo Cello by Michael Fitzpatrick
    10:05 am - “A Talk for World Peace” by His Holiness the Dalai Lama
    10:45 am - Question and Answer Session
    11:30 am - Program Ends

Question and Answer Session

During the Talk for World Peace, His Holiness the Dalai Lama will not only share his personal views and insights on the subject of world peace, but the audience will also have an opportunity to ask His Holiness questions.   We have reserved approximately 30 minutes for a question and answer period.  All questions will be reviewed and a cross-section of questions will be chosen.

Submitting Questions

Questions can be submitted in two ways:  (i) on-site through the assistance of our volunteers, and (ii) by submitting your questions online through July 8, 2011 at 5:00 pm (EST).

When submitting your questions, please apply the following guidelines:

- Please limit your question to no more than 100 words
- Please relate your question to the theme of peace (inner and outer)

Event Organizer

The Capital Area Tibetan Association (CATA) is a non-profit organization of Tibetan-Americnas in the Washington DC metropolitan area.  It strives to preserve and promote the unique Tibetan cultural tradition and to further the just cause of Tibet. The Tibetan Association is committed to the principle of non-violence and supports the leadership of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the temporal and spiritual leader of Tibet.

CATA is humbled at the opportunity to offer this World Peace event to the local community and to the greater public.

Event Location

The event will be held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, facing the National Mall.

The West Lawn is indicated on the map by the blue place-marker. 

Public transport is recommended due to the lack of public car parking near the venue. The West Lawn is accessible via Metro stations from Union Station (Red Line) and Capitol South (Orange and Blue Lines).

Water/Drink Bottles - Water will be available for free to all attendees courtesy of CATA. Complete details will be provided soon on our Event Do's and Dont's page.

Media Application

The deadline for applications to be submitted is Wednesday, June 29, 2011. Information on when and where Media Passes will be distributed will be e-mailed to accredited media by July 1, 2011.
